Roulette

Roulette is perhaps one of the most popular casino games on the planet, and it is certainly the most well known thanks to roulette stories and famous gamblers that stretch back hundreds of years.

In roulette, you bet on either a number or a range numbers (the so called Inside Bets), or the colour red or black, or whether the number is high or low, odd or even (the outside bets). The outcome is determined by a croupier who spins a roulette wheel, and then throws a small white ball in the opposite direction around a groove filled with numbered pockets spanning the edge of the wheel.

The ball loses  energy as it bumps against the pockets and loses kinetic energy and drops into one of the pockets on to the wheel.

There are 2 main types of wheel. American (with 2 zero pockets) and European (with one zero pocket).

History of Roulette

Roulette evolved froma game that was popular in France in the 1700's. The name roulette comes from the French name for "small wheel".

The game in its current format was described  in a French novel "La Roulette, ou le Jour" by Jaques Lablee who described a wheel with 2 zero pockets that gave the house its mathmatical advantage.

In 1843, the single zero roulette wheel was launched to gain a competitive advantage against more established casinos and this is the variant that has proved popular in modern day Europe.

In the 19th Century, roulette became popular all over Europe and the U.S, thanks to the simplicity of the game and its visual appeal. This game really drew the crowds around the table when a big play was going on (much like craps).

In the 20th century, the famous roulette casino towns were Monte Carlo with single zero European or French Roulette wheels, and Las Vegas, Nevada who offered American Roulette with  double zero wheels. This difference has lasted through to current times.

Roulette Bets

The 2 main types of bets in roulette are the Inside Bets where gamblers can select individual or groups of numbers and Outside Bets where you wager on colours, odd or even, high or low numbers etc. The payout for each type of bet is set by the casino.

There are always minimum and maximum bets imposed by the casinos which restrict players from playing progression systems like The Martingale ad infinitum.

Some of the more exotoc roulette bets are listed below:

Voisins du zero
Wher you bet on the numbers between 22 and 25 inclusive

Tiers
A bet on the numbers lying on opposite sides of the wheel between 27 and 33 inclusive.

Orphelins
A bet on all the numbers that sit outside the Tiers and Voisins
