Casino Games

There are a big variety of casino games available out there online. Most sites offer at least 50 and many offer more than 300. In any casino game, you bet casino chips and and try and predict random events. Casino games are available in online casinos, where permitted by law.

House Edge

Most people are aware that games played at a casino are skewed to the casino's favout in the long term. That is not to say that people do not win big jackpots at casinos, but on average (if you take all the revenue from all the players over a long period of time, the casino will take in more than it pays out in winnings. This House advantage, or "edge" is the way that casinos make money and run their businesses.

The long-term skew to the casino, or "house", is counter balance by the possibility of a winning a large jackpot in the short term. Casinos must strike the right balance between being profitable businesses, and providing entertainment in which people also win big pay offs, to create a buzz and demand.

Some games include an element of skill, where you must make choices that will affect your odds. Play well to a perfect stratgy in blackjack, for example, and you will enjoy better odds than someone playing to a poor strategy.

The House Edge is a function of the difference between the payout rates (ie how much the casino rewards you for a winning bet) and the real odds (ie the actual mathmatical probaility of that event. To illustrate this concept, let's take a look at roulette. In European Roulette, there is a green zero pocket and 36 number pockets (18 red and 18 black). If you bet £1 on black, the probability of coming up with a successful bet is 18/37 and the probability of you losing your money is 19/37. Although the casino pays out at 1:1 on this bet, the odds are slightly less than 50:50 because of the zero pocket (incidently there are 2 zero pockets in American Roulette, a single zero and a double zero, meaning that American Roulette has a bigger house edge than European Roulette. Always play European Roulette!)

The house advantage varies wildly from casino game to casino game, so you can also improve your cahnces by playing the right games.

For example Keno can have a house advantage of up to 25%, slots can go up to 15%, yet some variants of blackjack played to a perfect strategy only yield 0.3% to the house- which is obviously advantageous to you. Bear in mind, however, that if you are chasing the big progressive jackpots on slots like Mega Moolah, you will need to play against a higher edge. You are not going to win a £1,000,000 jackpot at blackjack. Again you need to balance things out.

Types of casino games

There are basically 3 groups of casino games: table games, slot machines, and RNG (random number generator) games such as Keno and online horse racing.

Slots machines are generally played by individuals (although you will see more and more tournaments offered online, or "tourneys", in which you try and get the highest score on a leader board using the casino's money. The top players scoop the jackpot which is funded from the "buy-in": a fee that the players have paid to enter into the tourney).

Table games, especially blackjack, are usually played with groups of people but more often than not you are betting against the house.
